What to do in a dental emergency

By Dr Jane Mitchell · AHPRA Reg. DEN0001234567 · 10 February 2026 · 3 min read

A patient having a dental X-ray taken

Dental emergencies are stressful, but staying calm and acting quickly makes a real difference. For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown (not the root), keep it in milk or your cheek, and call us straight away.

For a sudden toothache, rinse with warm water and call us — try to avoid placing painkillers directly on the gum. If a tooth breaks, save any pieces and rinse gently.

Whatever the situation, call us as early as you can. We keep appointments aside each day for emergencies and will do our very best to see you the same day.
